SPOILER ALERT: The following contains spoilers for From Season 4, Episode 9.
The fourth season of From is barreling toward the finish. Episode 9 of the MGM+ show brings to light some hidden truths about characters, while raising anxiety-inducing questions about others. The plot of “The Calm Before” moves quickly as Tabitha and Jade descend into the tunnels. But will their plan even work?
It turns out there’s been a mole in Fromville this whole time, but audiences may not even recall the character. Remember Clara, the woman from Colony House whose bike Jade stole when he arrived in town? Viewers haven’t really seen much of her this season, but it turns out she’s been betraying the townspeople. Sophia seeks Clara out and reveals her true nature (thanks to some creepy black eyes).
From reveals that Clara made a deal with the Man in Yellow when she arrived, seemingly being promised eventual safe passage out of the town. Of course, that comes at a price, and Clara is now called up to start secretly betraying the others. Her first order of business is giving Fatima a suspicious tea that will speed up whatever is going wrong with her.
Sophia pulls no punches when it comes to looking shifty and acting suspiciously. Despite being told the jukebox buttons at the diner don’t work, she is miraculously able to choose a song only a second later. That didn’t set off warning bells for anyone? The monsters are also seemingly called to surround the diner once Jackson Browne’s “Doctor My Eyes” starts playing. Again, not suspicious to anyone else? Furthermore, she’s not very subtle about cutting through the rope of the ladder, setting it up to break.
The Man in Yellow’s vision-inducing blood is also trying to turn Henry into another traitor. His glimpses of another (false) life in the hospital are becoming more frequent, and his directive to kill Victor in order to escape is becoming more urgent. Will he actually go through with it? He seems desperate to believe that the visions are actually true.
Meanwhile, Elgin discovers an old Polaroid in the diner showing the real Sophia from the 1970s. This proves that the Sophia he knows can’t possibly be the real one. The smart thing to do would’ve been to take the picture to Boyd. But Elgin instead shows it to Sophia right then and there—possibly one of the dumbest decisions ever made by a character in From.
This does prompt Sophia to reveal that she can only take the form of people who have died in the town. Does that have something to do with collecting their teeth? And does that mean that the other “ghosts” people have seen have really been the Man in Yellow? It seems more and more likely that it was really the Man in Yellow, not Jim, that Ethan was talking to earlier in From Season 4.
Are the Talismans Key to Solving the Mysteries of From?

How many times do From‘s townspeople have to be told to listen to Victor? Apparently, at least one more. When Victor relays the Boy in White’s message not to cut down the tree, Boyd refuses to heed his warning and handcuffs poor Victor instead. That can’t be a good sign.
“The Calm Before” is also notable because Tabitha finally tells her children the whole truth about her memories. Instead of believing simply one more supernatural thing, Julie—the show’s head Story Walker—all but says she thinks her mom is crazy. From seems to always have at least one Matthews acting incredibly annoying.
Down in the caves, Tabitha and Jade find the bones and get to work. But the monsters are ready for them, thanks to Sophia. As they congregate in the chamber, the cowboy says, “You know, you really shouldn’t be doing that.” It’s a nice nod back to the end of From Season 1 and “Your wife really shouldn’t be digging that hole.” But with the talisman precariously perched and Jade and Tabitha in the belly of the beast, could he actually be right? Fans won’t have to wait long to find out.
