Felicia Day is returning to The Guild and bringing the fans along for the ride. As the smash hit web series prepares for its 20th anniversary in 2027, a full-length reunion movie is now in the works with a Kickstarter campaign. But this is more than just another cast reunion project, as Felicia explained during the latest episode of the MOTIVATE with Brittany Frederick podcast.
“It was before the Internet as we know it. Nobody had an iPhone. YouTube had just started the year before, and yeah, it was a different world,” she reflected. “There’s so much that we have nowadays, and that’s what has been really fun in exploring the characters, in picking a setting and themes and story for this Guild reunion movie.”
The film is entitled The Guild: Ren Faire’d and as the title indicates, the Knights of Good find themselves at a renaissance faire. Codex, Tink, Vork, Clara, Bladezz and Zaboo have a whole new adventure in front of them. Yet what hasn’t changed is that the production is still independent, blazing its own trail the same way it helped put web series on the map. Felicia and the creative team aren’t changing their approach, but she is relishing the opportunity to go back to The Guild with the experience she’s gained since the series ended in 2013.
“I’ve grown as a person. I know myself a lot better. I know how to write a lot better,” she said. “It’s been just wonderful coming back to the characters and the world, and just the dialogue, and having the cast get together and do a script reading. I wasn’t going to do a Kickstarter unless the movie was really funny. We all got back together, started bickering and laughing exactly how we did [before]. Picked it up exactly how we left off, and we loved the script. Everybody loved it. So I’m like, okay, let’s do this.”
What’s also important to Felicia is that The Guild: Ren Faire’d is being made with the fans. There are plenty of crowdfunded projects, but it’s Felicia’s goal to make the Guild fandom feel like part of the team and give them a piece of this reunion journey. She spoke from the heart about how much the fans mean to her, not only in terms of professional success but the personal impact they’ve had on her.
“I wouldn’t be here creating without them,” she explained, “and I think every creator should look at their core fan base and their core community as their family, which I kind of do. That’s the confidence that I draw upon.”
Felicia Day has been an inspiration to content creators around the world, and it all began for her with The Guild. But as she prepares for the reunion movie and the 20th anniversary, she’s also appreciative of how far she’s come not only creatively but as a human. Felicia has given a voice to just how challenging and how rewarding it is to be an independent creator. It’s not simply putting things on the Internet; it’s putting yourself out to the world, with everything that entails, and hopefully people respond in the way they did with The Guild.
“The most important thing is that make sure you’re making things from your heart that are authentic,” she concluded when asked what advice she’d give to others who want to follow their own path. “If you’re trying to make something for the success of it or the money of it, it’s just going to not work or it’s going to crumble, or you won’t even be happy if you get successful.”
