Chicago Fire: Casey does some parenting
Episode Title: “The Right Thing”
Episode Description: Kidd spreads her wings as a lieutenant. Chief Hawkins rides with Ambulance 61 to learn more about Brett. Casey takes a trip out of town. A Ritter date night turns into an emergency situation.
What To Watch For: It looks like we might get to see the return of Matthew Casey’s (Jesse Spencer) parenting skills in Chicago Fire season 10. The show has sort of dangled this in front of Casey for awhile now, with Gabriela Dawson’s (Monica Raymund) pregnancy and then Dawson and Casey’s Louie storyline after that. But Dawson being written out of the show seemed to put the kibosh on any future “Casey as a dad or surrogate dad” type storylines.
Then in last week’s “Counting Your Breaths,” Casey found out that the kids of his late BFF Andy Darden—the firefighter who died all the way back in the Chicago Fire pilot—were in a very bad way due to their mom’s issues. He put in a furlough request, and now this week he’s headed out of town. So how is Casey going to continue to support these kids when their mom is on her way to jail? Is this a storyline for an episode or two, or something a bit longer like the Louie arc?
It doesn’t feel like it would be permanent, because having Andy’s two kids move into the loft with Casey, Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) and Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) would be a crowded house. But it’s still fun to see this side of Casey’s character as well as a callback to the pilot. Casey’s a decade older than he was when we met him and so questions about family and fatherhood are natural. This is also a guy who thought he might be out of the CFD not so long ago. Let’s see how this arc affects him and his new relationship with Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer), who’s basically the Firehouse 51 psuedo-mom anyway.
