Lotus Blossom plays A Capella in Netflix‘s new superhero film We Can Be Heroes, which sees Robert Rodriguez once again blending the family and action genres. It happens to be a perfect fit, because Lotus’s own story also combines those things; she’s the daughter of actor and martial artist Ernie Reyes Jr.
I recently connected with her to talk about her role in We Can Be Heroes, how she first became interested in performing, and the next talent that she’s working on adding to her repertoire.
Brittany Frederick: Did your interest in acting stem from growing up around it, or was there something else that made it appeal to you?
Lotus Blossom: I grew up watching my dad in his movies and I always wanted to be just like him. I got to see a couple of them in the theater on 35mm [film], and it was so inspiring. With support from both of my parents, I’ve been able to make that dream a reality.
BF: So many kids grow up pretending to be superheroes, so was it fun for you to have this role in We Can Be Heroes actually getting to do that?
LB: It was really incredible. In this movie, the kids are the ones who get to save the world, and they’re the ones that get to do everything, not the adults. Most of the time, that’s not really the case. I think that that’s something really powerful and inspiring. I had the greatest time getting to play A Capella.
BF: The film has a massive cast, including almost a dozen other young actors, and then several established stars. What was it like on set? How many co-stars did you actually get to interact with?
LB: Every day on set was such a blast. With the ten other kids, it was like the most amazing summer camp you could ever wish for. I didn’t have too many scenes with the [actors who played the] parents, but getting to work with them was super, super cool.
BF: Was there a highlight of the filming experience for you?
LB: One of my favorite parts of the movie were the fight scenes. They were so fun to film, and getting to work with the stunt team was so awesome.
BF: You’ve already got your next film in the pipeline. What do we need to know about Magic Max?
LB: Magic Max is also a family film. It’s about Tim, who is played by Parker Bates. He loses both of his parents and has to go live with his uncle [played by Ivan Sergei], who is a magician.
BF: Your career is still developing, so is there anything else you’re looking forward to doing? Any other talents you have or are wanting to pick up?
LB: I’d love to branch out into everything. I actually just started learning to play the bass. I do online weekly lessons and I’m really enjoying it, and I think that it’s something that I’ll be able to do for a while. I’m learning my first song right now, “Hey Joe” by Jimi Hendrix.
We Can Be Heroes is now streaming exclusively on Netflix.
