Jackson Dollinger is well-known for his role as the young version of Max Reynolds in Disney Channel‘s comedy Sydney to the Max. The series is currently in its second season, and Jackson recently connected with me to talk about what goes into playing a version of someone else’s character. He also spoke about his interests outside of acting, and the most interesting thing about being an actor.
Brittany Frederick: What does it mean to you to be part of the Disney brand?
Jackson Dollinger: I am so incredibly grateful to be part of the Disney family. I’ve always loved Disney. I have so many great memories of going to Disneyland and I grew up watching Disney shows and now that I get to star in one is just surreal. To be a small part of such an iconic brand is such an awesome experience.
BF: Your role in Sydney to the Max is unique because you’re playing the younger version of an adult character. What is that like from an acting standpoint?
JD: It is super cool. Everyone says that we look a lot alike. Ian Reed Kesler, who plays the adult version of Max, is awesome to work with and is super talented. There are times when I ask him how he would deliver a certain line or I will make a similar facial expression which helps with the continuity of the Max character in the 90’s and the present day.
BF: What did it mean to get to play Max for a second season and dig into the character a bit more?
JD: I was so happy when I heard the news that we were picked up for a second season. I love playing Young Max and I’m so happy that we got another season. Season 2 is filled with some great topics and I’m so glad I got to be a part of it. I think we have all really settled into our characters in season 2. Viewers definitely get to know more about Max’s backstory.
BF: Anything in Sydney to the Max season 2 that viewers should look out for?
JD: I would say viewers should look out for a little rapping and breakdancing, and some very serious and heartfelt Young Max moments.
BF: What’s the most fun or interesting thing for you about being an actor?
JD: I really love working with the extremely talented cast and crew. I feel so lucky to be able to go to many special premieres and events that I wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to attend. I also love the challenge of putting myself into character and developing a character.
BF: What TV shows or movies does Jackson Dollinger love? What makes you laugh?
JD: I love The Good Place and Daddy’s Home.
BF: You have a number of interests outside of your career; what are some of the most prominent?
JD: I love to skateboard; I have been skating since I was about two years old. Also, I love the ocean. I started surfing about a year ago and realized the importance of keeping our oceans and waterways clean. As a way to be actively involved in the cause, I adopted Malibu Surfrider Beach for 2020, where I will be hosting several beach cleanups.
I have been fortunate to serve as an Ocean Ambassador for Heal The Bay’s World Cleanup Day. I’m so grateful to have a platform to share my passion and to advocate for the elimination of single-use plastics and ocean conservation.
Sydney to the Max airs Fridays at 8:00 p.m. on Disney Channel.
