SPOILER ALERT: The following contains spoilers for the From Season 4 finale.

It’s not a season of From without tragedy, and Season 4 was the end of the line for two more major characters. Both Elgin and Marielle were killed off in the Season 4 finale, in very different ways but equally shocking scenes. But what did the actors playing them think about these cruel surprises?

Nathan D. Simmons and Kaelan Ohm spoke to TVBrittanyF.com about the end of their From journeys. They reflected on how their characters left the MGM+ series, and what the experience has meant to them. Plus, would they have any advice for those left standing ahead of the final season?

Brittany Frederick: Nathan, when Elgin chose to show Sophia that photo instead of anyone else, it seemed to seal his fate. Did you think that he was going to die once he did that?

Nathan D. Simmons: No, I was like oh, how am I getting out of this one? Let’s see, how’s he getting out of this one? And I kept reading, like oh, he’s gonna jump out the window. And then I died—but I had that hope the whole time until I heard the last line.

Kaelan, Marielle’s death was different, but there’s an element of sadness to it because she knew how things work in Fromville. In your opinion, was she thinking something like this was going to eventually happen to her?

Kaelan Ohm: I think she was really fighting to stick around as much as possible. [There were] high stakes for her, given that she has her fiance in the town as well, so there’s a lot to lose there. And though she had glimpses into the darker layers of the town, [she] hadn’t had any close encounters with monsters before anything like that, so I don’t think that was on really the forefront of her mind. Definitely not to go that way.

What did the two of you think about how those death scenes played out? Because it’s disappointing to leave the show, but both scenes were so well crafted.

Simmons: I felt really excited and happy when I read my character’s death, because I felt like it came full circle for Elgin. He got to go out on his morals, and he didn’t let the town corrupt him. It’s been trying to for the whole two seasons, so I really liked how it all came around for him, and he had to go out on his principles, which I thought was beautiful.

Ohm: How Marielle went, It was noble, and I think it spoke true to who she was as a nurse practitioner and someone who really cared about people despite her own personal struggles. If you’re going to go out, go out saving someone else.

What have been some of your proudest accomplishments on the show? What do you take away from your From experience?

Simmons: This show is like a dream. You don’t get to work every day on a show where all the cast like each other. We all are encouraging of each other, and everything feels like a proper oiled engine, and you want to go to work every day. It was a dream job. It really was a dream job.

Ohm: Same for me. Just having a multi-year, multi-season experience with a group of people—many of whom have become very dear friends—and just to experience that type of trajectory with a single character. It can be so quick [to] go into a movie shoot for a month and have to let that person go.

It was a great learning experience, and a challenge at times too, because this show continues, season to season, pretty much the moment we left off, [although it’s] a year and a half later. You have to remember because you’ve changed so much as a person, trying to bring that character back embodied in the same way, speaking the same way. It’s a great technical challenge as well, too. So I just appreciate the experience of doing that.

Everyone knows that From Season 5 will also be the final season. Do either of you have advice that your characters would give to the other characters to help them make it to the end?

Simmons: I’d tell them to trust nobody. [Laughs.]
