SPOILER ALERT: The following contains spoilers for From Season 4, Episode 8.

After the heart-pounding terror that happened in Episode 7, Episode 8 of From Season 4 propels the series forward with some emotional moments and the setup for something truly chilling. The MGM+ show is not shy about ripping characters away or throwing a wrench into their best laid plans, so this episode has set the tone for the remainder of the season: proceed with caution.

Kenny survived Episode 7, but at what cost? Fatima (Pegah Ghafoori) reveals something happened when she connected with Smiley and pulled him back from killing Kenny. She now feels cold, and black veins have appeared on her body. It doesn’t take a medical expert to realize that’s not a great sign. Is she becoming more like one of them? And that’s just one part of a busy episode.

Elsewhere, Jade (David Alpay) is determined to get to the children’s bones. He’s back to making models again! And he’s even more back to his old, quippy self. “I was in the Army,” he singsongingly mocks Boyd in a refreshing comedic moment.

Boyd refuses to follow Jade’s plan without having an escape route. And, while frustrating, he may be onto something. Father Khatri’s ghost (hallucination? trickery?) urges Boyd to stop being so afraid and take some big steps. But is he really the Father Khatri that From fans have known? Can his advice really be trusted?

Regardless, Jade comes up with a way out of the tunnels: they pull up the bottle tree. After all, the bottle tree grew right over the sacrificial chamber where the children were murdered. At face value, it sounds like a perfect plan. But you have to wonder if destroying the only thing that’s sent one of them home (remember what happened to Tabitha at the end of Season 2) is the right call?

From Proves Victor Is the Heart of the Town, Yet Again

After the discovery of the Man in Yellow’s horrible bag of teeth, Victor (Scott McCord) is all but convinced the cycle he was a part of is happening again, that almost everyone will die, and Ethan will be the new Victor. While Victor can’t stop the carnage from happening, he can protect Ethan from the crushing fear and loneliness he himself felt for decades.

After Tabitha finally relents, Victor takes Ethan to the truck he used to hide in as a child. “Everything is scarier when you’re lonely, so you have to pretend you’re not alone,” he tells Ethan plainly. He explains that he made friends with things inside the truck, like the walls and the floor, just so he would feel like he had someone. He even makes Ethan crude dolls to represent Julie and his mom, so Ethan will have a leg up on Victor’s loneliness.

One thing that is bothersome, though, is that Victor mentions the Boy in White again. Victor says the Boy in White is the one who told him to make inanimate friends to keep him company. But why couldn’t the Boy in White be his friend? Victor only ever saw him for brief moments and after long stretches. So what was keeping the Boy in White from fully being there with his supposed friend? There’s much more to Victor’s story than viewers are getting.

Eventually, Tabitha promises Victor he won’t be alone again and that she thinks she came back to town for him. But is that a promise she’ll be able to keep? As Henry’s visions come more frequently, it becomes clear what the Man in Yellow’s goal is with them. Henry has been pretty much convinced that the visions are real and this town is the dream, thanks to a convenient “bad LSD-induced coma” explanation from not-Victor. So what does the not-Doctor in the not-reality suggest to Henry? That he must “kill the anchor” in the supposed dream world to fully sever the connection and wake back up.

She means that he must kill Victor. To have brought Victor’s dad back to him, only to turn father against son, is almost too heartbreaking to handle.

And speaking of the Man in Yellow, he certainly knows who Tabitha is. After luring her out to the site of her crashed camper, he talks at length about how excited he is that she’s back and is doing so well this time. It sounds like it’s all just a game to him, and that he has some warped sense of frenemyship with Tabitha. He congratulates her on the plan to dig up the bones. She’s so close! Or is she? He deftly plays both sides, casting doubt on the plan. The bones could be everyone’s salvation—or the very thing that destroys them for good.
