Yellowstone season 4: Gil Birmingham on Rainwater’s next move

Tonight starts the fourth season of Yellowstone, which has become one of the biggest hits on television. But what makes the Paramount Network series so successful?

I posed that question to Gil Birmingham, who stars as Chief Thomas Rainwater on Yellowstone. His connection to series creator Taylor Sheridan stretches back years. Gil had roles in Sheridan’s films Hell or High Water (2016) and Wind River (2017), delivering a heartbreaking performance as the victim’s father Martin Hanson in the latter movie. He shared with me what it is about Sheridan’s work that’s stood out to him since that first collaboration five years ago.

Plus, we preview Yellowstone season 4, which begins in the aftermath of attacks on the Dutton family. Viewers know that Rainwater has a complicated relationship with the Duttons—often they are enemies, sometimes they are allies. So how will Rainwater move forward after this swath of violence against them? And as we continue to discuss more prominent and more accurate representation on television, what does Gil think about the future of Native American characters on the small screen?

Watch our video interview below to find out the answers to those questions and Gil’s commentary on working with Taylor Sheridan. Yellowstone season 4 premieres tonight on Paramount Network, preceded by a marathon of season 3 for audiences who may have missed an episode leading up to the explosive finale.

Yellowstone airs Sundays at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on Paramount Network.
