SPOILER ALERT: The following contains spoilers for From Season 4, Episode 6.
Donna is the beating heart of the MGM+ horror series From. She’s a survivor, she’s determined—but even she is never out of danger. From Season 4 has taken Elizabeth Saunders’ characters in some unexpected directions and scared viewers everywhere by potentially killing Donna in Episode 6. But thankfully, her story isn’t done yet.
Saunders spoke with TVBrittanyF.com writer Kelsey Yoor to discuss Donna’s close call. She also talked about the journey she and her character have taken in Fromville so far.
Kelsey Yoor: I just about had a heart attack when Donna had a heart attack. It was interesting to see that the writers were toying with the idea of taking you out of Fromville in an ultimately mundane sort of way. What was your reaction?
Elizabeth Saunders: It was horrifying to me because it’s something that I really am afraid of. It’s not a fantasy monster; it’s a thing that could take me out in real life. And so I was very anxious about it, and everybody was great. I was warned about it in advance, so I didn’t sort of open the script and go, what?!
I went, what?
No, you do! If I had just read it, I would have been like, what? But I also, with the last couple of episodes, seeing responses from fans—the idea of speculating that Donna might be taken out has been really moving for me, to know that people don’t want her to go.
And when I read it, I thought you know what, whether it’s Donna or anyone else, there is a point in this town that not everybody has to go because of a monster. Like people die.
Especially since we’ve learned that people dying in Fromville is not so great.
Yeah! Yeah. But it’s good because Donna, I feel like at her core, she’s definitely a fighter. It’s not surprising she fought through that, but it was very relieving.
Fans want to see her make it to the end of From next season, so not manifesting this, but on the off chance she doesn’t, how would you like your character to go out?
Either really mundane or I have said that because my husband [Cliff Saunders] played Dale—because he got such an epic out, I’m like, [From creator] John [Griffin], you have to top Dale’s death.
I feel like that’s what Donna would want, too.
Yeah! That’s great.
Over the past couple of seasons, Donna has stepped into this pseudo-mother role with Ethan. I feel like that’s been a really big growth for her. How did you go about bringing that sort of character development to her?
It just makes sense to me… I didn’t even kind of go oh, that’s happening. It just started happening. And I think the two go hand in hand. I’m a mom, and I have seen some things happen as a mom. And I think mothers and warriors can very much go hand in hand and are not recognized for it.
Can you, without giving away any spoilers, sum up in a few words or adjectives what viewers can expect for the back half of From Season 4?
Whatever you expect, don’t expect it. Whatever you don’t expect, assume it’s coming your way.
You know what? That should be the new tagline [for the show].
We get the scripts and go, what? What?!
I feel like wrapping your head around that is more than half the journey.
Oh, and that’s been half the joy of doing it, is having this thing that you’re like, you have no idea what adventure you’re going on from episode to episode.
