SPOILER ALERT: The following contains spoilers for Chicago Fire Season 15, Episode 1.

The Chicago Fire Season 15 premiere featured plenty of shakeups in and around Firehouse 51. In “New Blood,” the audience learned that Joe Cruz had broken his spine in the latest warehouse fire, changing not just his career but his entire life. Meanwhile, Kelly Severide took over as the new captain of 51, and a group of candidates caused early trouble in the house.

But another significant change happened behind the scenes, when Victor Teran succeeded Andrea Newman as the NBC drama’s new showrunner. He spoke on what it means to be in charge of the entire show and how he’s approaching the season. Plus, find out what’s in store for Cruz, Severide, and others in the episodes ahead.

Brittany Frederick: This is your first season as Chicago Fire‘s showrunner. What does that mean to you, and what was your overall thought on how to handle this season?

Victor Teran: it was a lot of hard work, to be honest with you. Really digging in from the moment I found out that I was going to be running the show this season. My mind was just working overtime on what we were going to do, how I was going to try to put my own stamp on it, while also honoring what the show is.

You can’t reinvent a show like this. I think that would be crazy, both from the audience’s standpoint, but also from the standpoint of this is something that really works. It’s a wonderful show. It’s a set of characters that we’ve all grown to love, and so mainly I saw my role as being as being a good steward of the world that other people created. I’m not trying to invent my own world.
