The One Chicago franchise keeps its season moving on NBC this week with brand new episodes of Chicago Fire, Chicago PD and Chicago Med. What should fans watch for in tomorrow’s upcoming installments? Check out the episode information and the potential highlights in this preview.

Chicago Med: Will Stevie’s mom survive?
Episode Title: “When You’re A Hammer, Everything’s A Nail”
Episode Description: Stevie’s personal and professional worlds collide when her mother becomes her patient. Dylan’s history with the father of a patient interferes with his perception of a case. Crockett’s allegiances are challenged when his patient’s liver is a potential match for one of Dr. Blake’s patients.
What To Watch For: No One Chicago fan is going to be surprised that Dr. Stevie Hammer (Kristen Hager)’s mom has ended up in the Emergency Department. That’s been foreshadowed all season with Mom’s (recurring guest star Bonita Friedericy, Chuck) health problems. What’s going to be the hook is all the roads this plot twist could go down.
The biggest question is whether or not Stevie’s mom will make it through this episode. In Chicago Med history when a loved one turns up as a patient it’s usually for as much angst as possible. Will’s father (Louis Herthum) was killed off. Connor’s dad (D.W. Moffett) was eventually killed off. Natalie’s mom (Margaret Colin) survived but her storyline led to Natalie leaving town. Family members do not have a great track record and it would not be a shocker if Stevie’s mom was another casualty, but because that’s so common, hopefully that’s not the case. The show needs to buck that trend.
Aside from that there are two big points to address. Viewers just saw last episode with the Dr. Pamela Blake story Chicago Med calling out how a doctor cannot operate on a family member. Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) was insistent about that with Blake. Therefore she should be equally as firm with Stevie. Will she actually do that, though, or will this be another episode where the ED team gets to play a little loose with the hospital rules? The writers also have a tendency to give them a lot of flexibility.
And these angsty moments also sometimes become ship moments. People are already campaigning for Hamstead to replace Manstead, and there have been little clues that Will might be interested in Stevie as his next girlfriend. Are we going to see Will comforting Stevie and they have a moment? Or Stevie entrusts Will with her mother’s massively important operation and after that they have a moment? If Chicago Med has any interest in Hamstead, we’re probably going to see the first blatant hint about it here.
This could be a predictable episode if the series sticks to how it’s done things before, or it could signal a new direction if the writers buck some of their trends. Also, looking at the title of this episode, how many puns will be made about Stevie’s name? Bonus points if she herself uses the title in a line of dialogue.
