Chicago PD: Hailey Upton is not okay, and that’s okay

Wednesday’s Chicago PD episode “In The Dark” brought Hailey Upton’s (Tracy Spiridakos) mental health situation to a head, as Upton suffered a panic attack investigating a serial child killer and Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) figured out the truth about Roy’s shooting. The episode ended with a thoroughly drunk Upton realizing that Halstead knew, although unaware that he had punched Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) over it.

There’s been plenty of mental and emotional trauma on Chicago PD. Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) has had a ton of it. Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda) ended up hooked on drugs, although that was a rough storyline that fans argued about. Halstead went to therapy even though 95 percent of it happened off screen. So to see Upton in this way is not abnormal but it’s interesting because it seems like the writers are actually going to show it for an extended period of time.

That’s terrible for her but great for viewers. It means Tracy Spiridakos is going to continue to get a lot of material to play with, and Upton is a more interesting character when she’s in opposition to Voight, because she’s as strong a personality as he is. Plus, now we have Halstead upset with Voight again (which is even more impactful to viewers since this is the second time Halstead’s partner/love interest has been carrying one of Voight’s secrets; remember that Erin Lindsay knew Voight murdered Justin’s killer). There’s so much to play with if this storyline goes on.

Hopefully Upton will find peace by the end of Chicago PD season 9, and her character could potentially grow in a whole new direction now that she’s experienced the negative effects that Voight was warning her about when he told her not to be like him. But the writers deserve kudos for not quickly resolving her issues. Now hopefully we will also see a similar opportunity for Burgess, because Kim’s trauma hasn’t been explored in the same way just yet.

Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago PD air Wednesdays from 8:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
