The Voice season 19: Ryan Gallagher by his playlist

Ryan Gallagher has joined Team Kelly Clarkson in The Voice season 19, and I’m introducing you to him in the most appropriate way – through his music. Check out this question and answer session with Madeline to learn about his favorite songs, what he’d like to perform on the show, and the tunes he would consider the most influential in his life and career.

Keep watching The Voice on NBC each Monday and Tuesday to see how far Ryan advances in The Voice season 19.

Brittany Frederick: What was the first song that Ryan Gallagher fell in love with and why?

Ryan Gallagher: “Come Monday” by Jimmy Buffett. Growing up in a house full of kids, I remember my mom had a little black radio and she would put it on the kitchen counter every morning, probably to drown us out a little. “Come Monday” was a popular song at the time and I remember walking around the house trying to sing [in] the Jimmy Buffett twang. I also vividly remember not being able to sing the low notes in the song, much to my frustration. It was the first song I learned and loved.

BF: What’s your favorite song right now?

RG: “Dream On” by Aerosmith. Living in Los Angeles, this song has been my driving companion for many a night. L.A. traffic is lovely. I love this song for its depth of feeling and the challenge that comes with belting it out to my steering wheel.

BF: If you had to pick one song to describe Ryan Gallagher, what would it be?

RG: “In the Silence” by Jason Upton. This song is about quieting yourself in order to hear Truth. In a world of constant noise, I think silence is a hard practice, and a difficult discipline However, it is extremely neccessary when trying to hear whatever that may be.

BF: Why did you pick your The Voice blind audition song? What about it made it the right choice for you?

RG: I chose “The Prayer” because it has incredible emotion, along with a challenging, beautiful melody that transcends the language barrier. Even if you do not understand the words, you understand the song. It’s a song of hope, and I can’t think of something the world needs more right now.

BF: Is there any song that you’d particularly love to perform in the rest of season 19?

RG: “Nessun Dorma.” Much like “The Prayer,” it carries with it a deep feeling. It connects me, as well as the listener, to the Divine. It is truly the deepest form of power music possesses.

BF: What’s one song or artist that viewers of the show would be surprised to know Ryan Gallagher enjoys?

RG: Justin Bieber. This is a guy who has been through it. He is extremely talented and honest. The way he has shown his vulnerability, to me, has actually shown his strength of character. This is extremely admirable for someone trying to break into the same industry he is in. Therefore, I respect this man and the struggles he has been through.

The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
