Our Kind of People: Premiere date for Yaya DaCosta series

Chicago Med fans now know when they can see Yaya DaCosta’s new series Our Kind of People, because FOX has officially announced the drama’s premiere date.

Our Kind of People will premiere Tuesday, September 21 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT, and is DaCosta’s first role since she chose to leave Chicago Med at the end of season 6.

Based on Lawrence Otis Graham’s 1998 book Our Kind of People: Inside America’s Black Upper Class, the series is described as “a soapy, thrilling exploration of race and class in America and an unapologetic celebration of black resilience and achievement.”

It centers on DaCosta’s character Angela Vaughn, a single mother who returns to a Martha’s Vineyard community to reclaim her family’s name and find success with her hair care line. But after Angela discovers a “dark secret” about her mother, both her world and the community of Oak Bluff are thrown into turmoil.

The new show is created by Karin Gist (Star), executive produced by Lee Daniels (Star and Empire), and the cast also includes Morris Chestnut (Rosewood), Joe Morton (Scandal), Nadine Ellis (Let’s Stay Together), Lance Gross (Hawaii Five-0), Kyle Bary and Alana Bright.

The role is certainly a departure for DaCosta, who spent six seasons playing nurse April Sexton on Chicago Med in what was only her second TV series regular role. She was with the One Chicago medical drama from its backdoor pilot in 2015, and her character was ultimately written out earlier this year by April being accepted into a nurse practicioner program to further her career.

Our Kind of People airs Tuesdays at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
