Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted travels to Indonesia this week, visiting the highlands of Sumatra, and it’s a particularly messy episode of the NatGeo series.
There’s chasing cattle through mud, action on the water and in caves, and at one point some rain cmes to spoil Gordon’s culinary aspirations. Of all the episodes so far during Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted season 2, this is the craziest one yet. As a result, it’s got even more entertainment value than watching Gordon be scared by a hippo. (Although he does run afoul of another large animal.)

Uncharted has always been one-part cooking show, one-part adventure show, and the “Sumatra” episode leans a bit more on the latter. One suspects it’s because there are so many odd moments on Gordon’s latest travels that the producers had to get them all in. That means it’s not as deep, necessarily, as the previous installments of the season but the hour still showcases locations – and food options – that audiences have likely never seen before.
The most interesting part of this episode, though, is Gordon’s interactions with this week’s expert, Chef William Wongso. Very few people intimidate Gordon Ramsay but you can see how awed he is by Chef Wongso and his lengthy resume. It’s different and it’s fun.
And that’s probably the best word to sum up this episode – it’s a lot of fun to watch. Between Gordon’s numerous falls, the uncooperative weather, and the reactions of the locals, this is one-part cooking show, one-part comedy of errors, and still finds a way to show off more about Indonesia.
