Chicago PD: Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati)

I’m going to put all my eggs in the “Burgess lives” basket because the worst thing Chicago PD could do is kill off Kim Burgess in the Chicago PD season 9 premiere. Marina Squerciati is an incredible actress, and even though it’s been seasons since Burgess was promoted to the Intelligence Unit, it still seems like she hasn’t reached her full potential.

Burgess is beyond tough and she’s shown how smart she is, but a lot of what’s come her way hasn’t completely served the character. She’s suffered so much—getting abducted in season 6’s “Ties That Bind,” getting pregnant in season 7 only to lose the baby in a brutal attack in “I Was Here,” and getting abducted again in the season 8 finale. And in between these traumatic incidents, Chicago PD has played another round of “will they, won’t they” with Burgess and ex-fiance Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) where they care deeply for each other but aren’t actually together.

Kim deserves a lot more during Chicago PD season 10. She has to have some kind of compound trauma after this latest incident, but after that, she ought to be less damsel in distress and more of the badass Squerciati has shown her character can be. She deserves more out of her relationships; she and Ruzek don’t have to be a couple to support one another but picking a side is good for both of them. Her former partner Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) could be her BFF again and that’d be great for both characters. And don’t forget that Kim is now mom to a little girl; let’s hope the show doesn’t push that plot point into the background after introducing it last season.

This could be the season where Burgess really takes off. She could survive and thrive in the Intelligence Unit, like possibly taking the detective’s exam. She could get more friendship scenes with Atwater or even form a new friendship with someone like Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) that gives her someone else other than Ruzek to lean on. Then she could either find happiness with Ruzek romantically or just have him in her corner as a great friend and move on. But everything in her life is wide open, and the more Chicago PD gives Burgess to do, the more Marina Squerciati is going to run with. She’s proven she can handle anything the writers can give her so why not let her shine instead of knocking her character down?
