Chicago Fire: Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo)

Stella spent two seasons working to advance her career in the Chicago Fire Department, and finally realized that dream last season when Chicago Fire promoted her to Lieutenant. But the promotion came with a down side as there wasn’t an open spot for a Lieutenant at Firehouse 51—presenting a problem that wasn’t quite figured out by the time season 9 ended.

Chicago Fire season 10 will obviously have to resolve that issue and again, using common sense, it feels unlikely that Stella is going anywhere. Unless NBC is keeping another cast change under wraps Miranda Rae Mayo is still with the show, which means that her character has to stick at 51 somehow. She could leave temporarily but she has to come back; it’s a bit difficult to write for a character who’s working at another firehouse! Even after that, though, Stella being a Lieutenant now creates a new dynamic. Firehouse 51 will have three Lieutenants and a Captain; that’s a lot of officers. How do they all work together and where does Stella fit into that leadership team functionally?

One Chicago fans are also excited about a Stellaride wedding now that Stella is engaged to longtime boyfriend Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney). But Chicago Fire is bound to throw in some kind of speed bump before the pair make it to the altar. Will somebody get cold feet? Will one of them end up in another life-threatening situation? Hopefully they’re not going to have another argument that tears their relationship apart again. Yet fans ought to brace themselves for trouble in paradise, which might also then have an effect on the job (or vice versa).

The show invested two seasons in making Stella a rising star in the CFD and Chicago Fire season 10 is where that has to pay off. The writers spent all this time showing why she deserved to be an officer but now they have to make it matter—both in terms of seeing her perform well and in what it adds to the show. It would be a huge waste if she made Lieutenant and then was terrible, and if the series is just going to have her be promoted and then forget about it, what was the point of the storyline? Stella’s done all this growth and now it’s time to watch her truly spread her wings.
