SPOILER ALERT: The following contains spoilers for Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat Episode 6.
Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat Episode 6 is like that spoof episode of The Simpsons with all the fake spinoffs. “Culture Fit” is centered around the annual talent show put on by Rockin’ Grandma’s Hot Sauce, and since this is a comedy, Prime Video viewers know some of these acts will not have any talent whatsoever. Plus, there’s a celebrity cameo to push the episode that last bit over the top.
But before fans can get to that setpiece, they first have to get through the awkwardness that is Amy Patterson and “Other” Anthony Gwinn’s hookup. It is so obviously not a coincidence that Kevin Gomez decides he wants to come back to Oak Canyon for the talent show, and he finds out about the new couple in a matter of minutes. One of the best moments doesn’t last long enough: PJ Green tells Kevin that Amy hooked up with Anthony—not specifying which one. The awkward interaction between Kevin and hero Anthony Norman is hilarious, but too short as Anthony wastes no time in clearing up the confusion.
The middle of “Culture Fit” thus seems to be a competition to see who will be more uncomfortable: Anthony or the people watching at home. That’s because Kevin insists on having an HR meeting, in which naturally Amy and “Other Anthony” provide way too much information. Viewers will see this coming from a mile away, and again Company Retreat lets a beat go too early when Kevin asks hero Anthony to start conducting the HR interview, but drops it after just one question. A lot of the jokes in Episode 5 are a game of “almosts,” in that they’re good but they could’ve been even better.
The talent show is primed for disaster when Triukas decides to participate, but what could’ve been completely chaotic instead winds up being a celebrity spotlight. And unfortunately, that celebrity is not James Marsden; it would have been fantastic to see him create mayhem again. But aside from him potentially being recognizable and blowing the gig, he’s a little bit busy with his other projects. Instead, Company Retreat enlists Sia—and while she is absolutely game for what’s being asked of her, it’s hard not to feel like the bubble gets burst a little bit. That’s because there’s a whole separate beat of Sia asking Anthony to try on her trademark wigs, and then of course she gets to perform, and the viewer gets sucked into that the same way PJ does.
That being said, the real MVP of the episode is actor Ryan Perez, who’s asked to go for broke when Kevin decides to deliver an anguished cover of (what else?) Radiohead’s “Creep.” He fully commits to tearing up the song, and it’s actually a decent version, because it sounds exactly like it should being belted out by a jilted would-be boyfriend. Sia sounds phenomenal, but Perez is absolutely fearless. “Culture Fit” is really the Kevin episode save the expected announcement that Rockin’ Grandma’s is being sold to Triukas. It’s a collection of jokes before Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat gets to taking on the Galactic Empire.
