The Angel series The Wayfinders is straight out of so many people’s childhood dreams. When Flynn and his two friends find themselves dropped into a fantasy world, their high school problems suddenly seem inconsequential. The trio must find their way home—while going on fantastic adventures along the way.

With the first season now streaming, TVBrittanyF.com spoke to The Wayfinders star Evan Nikolas Fields about what it was like to play in the fantasy sandbox. He also spoke about how he prepared for the role of Flynn. Plus, what were some of his favorite moments from the whole experience?

Brittany Frederick: How did you approach playing Flynn? Since you can’t necessarily prepare for the larger than life scenes that he and his friends find themselves in.

Evan Nikolas Fields: You’re definitely right. I think it stems back from childhood and just playing make believe. You could be prepared [with] what’s in the script, but you really have to be immersed in your world. Because, just like you said, you can’t really prepare for certain things. When you’re playing to a werebear, you’re really playing to a tennis ball on a stick. So you really have to have that imagination.

Yet since the world around Flynn is so outrageous, how do you keep the character grounded and feeling realistic? How do you not get lost in the excitement of it all?

I would just say being present and knowing who I am as the character. Being myself, and trying not to get distracted by this fantasy world and warlocks and everything around me. Just staying present, being in the moment and connecting to the character and the people around you on a deeper level, really helps ground the character.

As you said, the connection between the group is key to the success of The Wayfinders. How did you form that rapport with Tamara Smart and Vincent Mattis, who play Flynn’s friends Oaklee and Cash?

It was very natural. We just had chemistry behind the camera, and I think it kind of just leaked onto camera as well. The first time I met these people, it really felt like they’re going to be my forever friends, and we’ll have a long, lasting friendship. We bonded almost immediately, even to the point where we [wanted] to hang out after shooting.

Some of the cast lives in London. Me and Vince live in the US; I live in California, he lives in South Carolina. We ended up flying to London after just to hang out with everyone more, and then we took a trip of our own together to Paris. So we just bonded off screen, and that helped our bond on screen as well.

Did you have a favorite episode or moment from the first season?

Episode 5 I really like. I’m not going to say why. I just had to do a stunt that I’ve never had to do before. So that was pretty fun.

What would you recommend to viewers after they’ve seen The Wayfinders? Anything else that you love as a fan?

It would definitely be the Disney movie Treasure Planet. I love that movie. It’s great. And I think it’s super-underrated. It’s a bit different from our show, obviously, but I think it shares the same components. I love it.

If I’m connecting to my character Flynn, who’s a gamer, I’ve been nerding out on this game called ARC Raiders. You can play it on PC, you can play it on console, and it is this dystopian game—open-world, but it’s really cool, because the creators leave it up to you… You’re in a dystopian world that’s been taken over by robots. There’s these surveilling robots that try to spot people, and you have to hide from them. And you can team up with people, fight the robots and extract with all your loot, or you can fight each other, take each other’s loot and extract. It’s really fun.
