Season 3 of Power Book IV: Force has already not been kind to Stacy Marks and Vic Flynn. Stacy’s unchecked ambition led her to getting some devastating personal news from Bobby—news that doesn’t seem to have sunk in. Meanwhile, Vic is still caught between his sister Claudia and Tommy Egan, which is about the worst place to be in.
Actors Miriam A. Hyman and Shane Harper joined TVBrittanyF.com to talk about how Power Book IV: Force Season 3 tests both their characters. What was it like for Miriam to dig so deeply into Stacy’s personal life, when the character is and has been so focused on her mission to take down Tommy? And how would Shane describe Vic’s mindset when almost no one seems to be on his side?
Brittany Frederick: Miriam, audiences also know you from your role in The Chi, which was another series set in Chicago. Now that you’ve spent more time with Stacy, do you see any similarities between her and Dre?
Miriam A. Hyman: One thing was really funny is that they both shoot on the same lot. That was interesting, because it was like, when I was finished with this show, I just kind of walked just a few steps and then I was on the next show. [Laughs.]
But I would say for both of the characters, they were both strong, determined, passionate individuals. [They] love family, but also at the same time, are really impassioned to want to move their careers forward.
And then they were very different in a lot of different ways. As an actress, I appreciate that versatility—being able to play two really different people, and then they are two really different worlds. You don’t really see Dre dealing with too much violence or anything like that. But then at the same time, you have Stacy Marks, [who] that is all that she’s understanding within this series, what she’s having to deal with constantly. So it was great having that particular balance.
You do get to explore Stacy’s personal life more in Power Book IV: Force Season 3, although for a very difficult reason. What was that experience like for you?
She loves Bobby, but at the same time, I think that her career is maybe just a little bit more important to her right now. It’s difficult for her to have to balance the two. And so I think instead of balancing, she just chooses one and says hey, I’m going to make this a priority. Not that she doesn’t care for her spouse. Not that she doesn’t still love him.
But right now, at this point in her career, as she’s still trying to climb the ladder, she really puts herself first. She puts herself first. She puts her career first. And there’s some drawback that she may experience; we’ll see. But it’s a tough place to be in, I think, for any of us that are really trying to balance and choose what’s most important. And she makes the choice that she makes.

Shane, on a lighter note, given the tough circumstances that Vic remains in, there’s still a zero percent chance that you sing on this show, correct?
Zero. I don’t think Power: The Musical is happening any time soon. [Laughs.]
But where is Vic’s head at, considering he has pressure from all sides? Everyone wants something from him, and all of it is going to put him in someone else’s crosshairs.
It’s definitely a dizzying experience for him. He doesn’t know which way is up. He’s just trying to survive. Like you said, he’s in the middle of two titans. Stacy and Tommy are pretty unstoppable, and they have a lot of agency, and they’re determined to get what they want. They’re using Vic as their pawn. So he’s just trying to survive. And maybe he can find some sneaky ways to make something work for himself in this. It’s definitely very fun.
