When Power Book IV: Force returns to Starz, it’s the beginning of the end for one of TV’s best crime dramas. Season 3 is the final season for the Tommy Egan-led Power spinoff, and while there’s more in this universe on the horizon, there’s nobody like Tommy. But how will he go out?
Ahead of the November 7 season premiere, TVBrittanyF.com caught up with Power Book IV: Force executive producer Gary Lennon, who gave a few hints as to what viewers can expect in Season 3. He also opened up about saying goodbye to this specific chapter in the Power universe and why he considers this his favorite show.
Brittany Frederick: You’ve been in the Power universe for a long time. What was it about Power Book IV: Force and the character of Tommy that continues to stand out to you?
Gary Lennon: When I saw the original Power, the character of Tommy just popped for me. He reminded me of my brother, who’s passed now, but my brother was a very sort of tough, street guy and had been in prison. [He] was funny and violent, and had a huge heart—the way that Tommy is.
When I saw Tommy, I thought, I know this guy. Not only do I know this guy, I can write this guy because he’s in my body. He’s in my family. And that’s how I feel about the character Tommy Egan, but that’s also how I feel about [actor] Joseph Sikora. And so I think it was a melding of the worlds. I think I was meant to come and join him, and I’m grateful that I did, because I’ve had a lot of fun working out a lot of my own family stuff, working on Tommy Egan as a character.
In that sense, what was it like to make Power Book IV: Force Season 3? It’s the final season of this show, but it’s not the end of your time with the Power franchise, and it may not even be the end for some of these characters.
It is an emotional ending because [of] the group of people that we collectively brought to make this show in Chicago, which is such a great city, and the crew there was incredible. We just spent three years of our lives there making the show. Personally, I just got a text yesterday from one of my camera operators sending me a book; we’re still close.
It’s like working in the ER unit of a hospital. You go through everything together, and you come out the other side. So that part is very hard, because we’ve let them go. Yes, I do get to go on and create other stuff, but it’s not with all those people. And yes, there’s potential of pulling threads forward into another world, but it’ll be different. It’ll be its own animal. And I hope that that animal, that universe, that world, has the same tender, loving care that this did—because it’s my favorite time and my favorite show that I’ve ever created.
What would you consider the highlights of Season 3? What should Power Book IV: Force fans be looking toward in this last run of episodes?
I think all the storylines have a lot of twists and turns, and great power to it. Seeing Tommy step into a different part of his character this season is one of my most fulfilling pieces of the season. The Jenard and Shanti relationship was really, really, really fun to play with and tease apart.
And I think the actress who plays Stacy Marks—Miriam [A. Hyman]—has fireworks to be shown. She’s an actress who went to Yale. You would never imagine her playing this kind of role. She surprises us in very unexpected ways as an actress [with] her ability, and I think we’re just touching on it. I hope that somebody else scoops her up and puts her in something else.
