Vincent Martella is part of the lives of families around the world—even if they’ve only heard his voice. The star of Disney’s classic animated series Phineas and Ferb (he’s voiced Phineas Flynn for well over a hundred episodes) has been able to flex his vocal talents across television, video games and even theme parks.

With Phineas and Ferb Season 5 bringing audiences back into the family, Vincent joined TVBrittanyF.com to talk about how much the show has meant to him, his other roles that may have caught viewers by surprise, and who he considers to be his “voice acting hero.”

Brittany Frederick: It was 2015 when Phineas and Ferb originally finished a very successful run, so what is it like in 2025 to not only celebrate that anniversary, but bring the show back for more seasons?

Vincent Martella: It’s been fantastic. I love working on Phineas and Ferb, and I’ve worked on it the entirety of when it’s been on the air. And even though we were off the air for a little bit, we were able to come back and do the film Candace Against the Universe in 2020 and that was super-fun. This is the best job I’ve ever had. People are so passionate about this show and about what it means to them and about who these characters are. The fact that we get to tell more stories and bring more episodes to people—we will happily make this show as long as Disney lets us. So hopefully we’re around for a long time now. It’s nice being back.

You’ve continued to grow and evolve as an actor since 2015. From a performance standpoint, how are you approaching Phineas and Ferb now compared to the first few seasons?

I’m a much more experienced actor now, because of all the time that I spent on Phineas and Ferb, on other Disney animated shows, on video games, on big Batman and Robin movies and things like that. I have become a better actor. I do a lot of sketch comedy, which is live and so I’m on stage a lot, and I think I just utilize all my training and all my experience to be better at my job now.

I know this character really well. I know what the creators and the writers want from me. I’m in the writers’ room all the time, talking to them about it and trying to make sure that I’m playing Phineas the best way that I can. I really think that we found the heart of this character throughout the entire journey with him. I just feel like I know him so well, and I know the humor of the show so well. And so I guess that’s the difference in coming back to it so much later, is I just have all this wealth of of knowledge and experience.

The creative team has spoken about how important it was to not just bring the show back for the sake of reviving it; they wanted to tell new stories with these characters. What have you enjoyed most about this second go-around?

They wanted it to feel like it was really like a continuation of the show. We weren’t reinventing the wheel. People love the show for a reason, and we wanted to keep the same heart, the same humor, the same attitude for all these episodes. But what we’re able to do with the new season, which is really fun, is we’re able to give some smaller characters entire episodes to really shine and show them in different lights that we weren’t able to the first time around, and that I think is really special.

The things I’m I’m most excited about are some our guest stars. We had Michael Buble come on and sing a song for us all about a zoetrope, which was hilarious and beautiful, because Michael Buble has the voice of an angel. He’s a lovely man. That’s probably been my favorite part so far, is working with some of the people we’ve gotten to work with.

One of the cool things about the popularity of Phineas and Ferb, and the size of the Disney brand, is that you’ve gotten to take the character outside of the show. What’s the most fun place you’ve played him?

We just had an entire category on Jeopardy! where I got to present all of the questions. That was really fun and very surreal. So that’s one of my favorites.

But my all-time favorite is having stuff inside the [Disney theme] parks. We have Phineas and Ferb at Epcot right now, and they were at Disney’s California Adventure out here at Disneyland. They were here for all of June, and that is really cool. So they have songs that I’ve sang, lines that I’ve said, playing in the parks—and that is super, super fantastic and very fun and very surreal. That’s probably my favorite thing. I’ve gotten to announce things in the parade before. My voice has been played on Disney cruise ships before. Things like that are really special to me.

The opposite of that is the dramatic work you’ve done as Jason Todd/Red Hood in the DC Animated Universe. How would you describe an experience like that, when you’re completely on the other side of the acting spectrum?

That’s the best part about being an actor, especially working on something fun like Batman. That’s iconic, getting to play Robin, getting to play Red Hood. Those are two really important characters to generations of people. But the best part about being an actor is you get to tell a bunch of different stories, and you get to play very, very different people.

What’s been nice in my career is that, yeah, I do have something very fun and very innocent and loving [in] Phineas and Ferb, but then you turn on Under the Red Hood, or Death in the Family—these really dark, brooding superhero pieces, and they’re very operatic and violent. It’s fun to have that kind of change in my career, where I can play these very, very different characters, and it’s something I’m certainly proud of, and I love to do.

Your ability to balance both is somewhat unique, because sometimes when people get closely tied to a role, they worry about being typecast or just want to do something different creatively. How do you see your career going forward?

I just like working on fun things, and I’m passionate about what I do, so I try not to limit myself to one thing or think that I can only do one thing. I’ve worked with really diverse groups of people in different genres. And when you work with other artists, they bring things out of you that you didn’t know that you were capable of originally. I just do my best to tell the stories that I can as an actor, and I end up with some really, really fun things. I hope that continues for my career.

I hope I get to keep playing characters that are really different in projects that are very different. Seeing the way that people react to to something that I work on, like a Disney kids show… or people reacting to how I work on something like The Walking Dead, those two things couldn’t be further apart. And I want to have that for the rest of my career. I love that. It’s what excites me. It’s very fun trying new things and getting better at them… You learn a lot about yourself, and you learn a lot about your own emotions and what you can do.

Any type of project or role that’s still on your to-do list?

I would love to work on more video games. I love playing video games, so I would love to work on more video games. I really want to work on the next Grand Theft Auto. I think that’d be awesome, even if I just play one random side character that you only meet every thousandth time that you pass a grocery store or something. I would also love to do some anime. I haven’t really worked on anime, and a lot of it is non-union, so I can’t.

My number one goal is I would love to work on one of Seth MacFarlane’s shows. He is my absolute voice acting hero. I love his work. I think he’s so, so talented. So I would love to work on Family Guy or American Dad, or the new Ted animated series coming out. hopefully someday I can work for one of the Fuzzy Door productions. I would love to do that.

Aside from acting, you’ve got a wide variety of other interests. What are some of the other things that you’re passionate about?

I’m very, very proud of the music work that we do on Phineas and Ferb. I think it’s fantastic. Our writers are incredible—our writers write a lot of the music. Olivia Olson, who’s actually one of my best friends and co-stars on Phineas and Ferb, she plays Vanessa Doofenshmirtz [and] she’s also a writer on the show. She writes a lot of the music. But we have a a Christmas album coming out this year, on vinyl. Disney Music is releasing this green Christmas album, and I like five songs on it. I’m really excited about that. I think it’s really cool that I’m going to have a Christmas album that families are going to be able to play every year as they grow up.

I’m really passionate about movies; I go to movies a lot. I do like playing a lot of games. I used to Twitch stream a lot more, but I’m trying to work on that, and then I do a lot of sketch comedy. It’s usually on my social media. I always hope that people follow me on Instagram and on TikTok, so that they can follow both my voice acting and my comedy as well. What’s nice about having a platform on social media now is you can show people like, Hey, here’s all the characters that I’m playing as a voice actor, because they’d never know otherwise. It’s nice to be able to promote projects that you work really hard on, and that hundreds of people work really hard on, because we have so many great people at all these studios who make these things happen.
