SPOILER WARNING: The following contains spoilers for FROM Season 2, Episodes 1-7.
As the charming son of Sherriff Boyd (played by Harold Perrinaeu), Corteon Moore’s Ellis has dealt with a ton of traumas and terrors in FROM. He sat down with me recently to go over the biggest scares of the season and what makes this horror story just plain fun.
Kelsey Yoor: With everything that happened in Season 1 – from Ellis reconciling with Boyd to the bus showing up for Season 2, what have you felt have been the biggest challenges for Ellis this year?
Corteon Moore: Look, I mean the first and easiest answer is just to survive every single day. Yeah. It’s just nearly impossible. I think if I was in FROMville, as we seem to be calling it, I would be dead in three hours. I mean, Ellis has gone through such an insane evolution, since Season 1.
Whether it be, you know, dealing with the grief of losing his mother and then jumping to rebuilding this relationship with his father. I think he’s kind of arrived as the young man finally, and he’s kind of just learning what that means, you know, as people saw what the episode with Kelly, (poor Kelly) with the rod in our head. RIP. (Laughs) RIP! You know, and spending time like that really, really trying to save somebody or really being heartbroken that somebody else is in such pain, I think he’s over his pain and he’s ready just to get the fuck out of there. He’s ready just to live every single day with the love of his life and just get this done.
So I think that’s been a challenge, but it’s also been a bit of an awakening in this guy. Yeah. That’s a great word. I feel like the energy could definitely come through. You can definitely see him stepping up a little bit more this season and being more of a man than a boy. And he’s trying to not be an asshole. I think that’s the biggest thing: he’s trying. Maybe that’s a challenge. He’s trying not to argue with his dad. I mean, in episode three instantly he went at his neck. But it’s hard, man. He’s frustrated. He [should be] at a bar playing, basketball, and drawing. He doesn’t wanna be dealing with fucking monsters every day.
But it’s fun to play. It’s really fun to play.
KY: And what’s the scariest thing you’ve gone through this year?
CM: God, I keep wanting to talk about this one episode to come out, episode six…
KY: I’m caught up through there with the screeners! We can hold the interview.
CM: (Laughs) Oh, you know what? Hold the interview! (Laughs) The scariest thing that he had to deal with was getting fucking stabbed in his abdominal and then bleeding out for an entire night and getting ripped across the town in a van. And then kind of through the bloody haze, kind of half passed out hearing that his dad has worms in his blood! (Laughs) To somebody in my house who hasn’t seen the episode and I just spoiled it, but whatever!
Anyway, all he’s had to do with is crazy shit, but I think almost dying is definitely the biggest thing. I mean, in Season 1 he got stuck in the house with Smiley, which I think is like one of the first times we saw Smiley and, then he ended up breaking his arm… He just can’t catch a break.
The whole thing is just “beat up on Ellis” season, just getting an ass beat every day. Broken arm finally heals? Stabbed. Next season I’m gonna lose a leg or get shot in the heart or something.
KY: Don’t give them ideas!
CM: (Laughs) It might just be like, make Ellis a target for Season 3 then. I’m down as long as I survive! I kinda like the punches. Yeah, it’s kinda fun actually.
KY: Speaking about that, what would you like to see for Ellis? What are your hopes for him if we go into Season 3?
CM: There are some things that are coming up between Ellis and Fatima that I think he’s really hopeful about, as tough as it is to maintain hope in this town.
I really hope we do get the chance to see Ellis continue to grow up and continue to experience normalcy at whatever cost. I mean, as long as nobody else needs to get hurt, but I would really love to see him happy because he’s been so fucking just stripped apart every day. I just wanna see him get to have a romantic candle at dinner with the love of his life, or play catch with his dad, or have a beer with Ricky or Kenny in the bar. You know, something fun. (Laughs) Otherwise, I keep telling John I want to go to the woods. I wanna have a bow and arrow and I want to put like war paint on my face and just fucking start killing…
KY: Like Prey style!
CM: (Laughs) Yeah! Like exactly like Prey. Where is the predator? Imma just take him out. I would watch that.
KY: I would watch that in a heartbeat! Is there any advice that you would give for Ellis to get through the rest of the season?
CM: Hopefully not too much, dude. I would tell him to try to meditate because he has so much angst. I mean, he’s got like 50% of angst that he had in Season 1, but I would tell him just to relax a little bit more and just like… Dude, it’s fucked.I mean, I think he does a good job, but like, you know, he’s still in love. I would tell ’em to relax. I would also say… I don’t know! (Laughs) That’s the crazy thing about this show is there’s no advice. Like what are we supposed to do? It’s like when Kristi (played by Chloe Van Landschoot) told Boyd, “try not to avoid any unnecessary stress…” It’s like, what are you talking about?! (Laughs) How would the hell would we do that here? It’s impossible. So, yeah, I don’t know. I always tell him, good luck, man.
KY: Honestly, that’s probably about as good advice as you can get. How do you think you would react if you were in there? I mean, I know personally I would take myself out.
CM: I would literally go into the street and just do this: Right the second the sun came down, I’d be like, bro, I hope this is just a dream or we’re in a coma or something. Just take me out and I’ll see you on the other side! I’m [either] just giving up, or I’d turn into a John Wick-style monster killer, and then just start taking them out every day! (Laughs)
KY: And we’re right back to Prey! I fully support that. Well, I hope that we do get Season 3 and Ellis gets to live out his action star dreams and – hopefully – a happy ending and a little bit of rest.
CM: Me too! Yeah, people gotta keep watching and then we’ll keep coming back. I guess that’s the trick!
