SPOILER WARNING: The following contains spoilers for FROM Season 2, Episodes 1-7.
While the FROM town hasn’t been easy on anyone, Avery Konrad’s Sara has really borne the brunt of it. As ostensibly the town’s pariah, Sara may just hold the key to learning more about the truth of their terrors – if only she can find forgiveness first. Avery Konrad sits down with us to discuss her character’s difficult journey and why we shouldn’t underestimate Sara.
Kelsey Yoor: I’ve been a big fan from day one and a Sara Defender. I feel like poor Sara, her intense arc never stops, and especially this season. What have you found has been different about tapping into Sara’s energy going from Season 1 into her return to Season 2?
Avery Konrad: I think she’s very different this season. She’s more defeated, and kind of dealing with all of the tragedies that had happened in Season 1. [So we’re] really seeing her sit with those things and start to deal with them because she hasn’t dealt with them at all, or I don’t think she’s had a moment to breathe and kind of reflect. So you see her do that and that’s definitely a different look on her for sure.
KY: She deserves a chance to breathe, honestly! Do you have any theories about her special connection to the town, particularly with Elgin being here now and you guys having that interesting first meeting? Does that change anything?
AK: I think that Victor, Sara, Elgin, and Ethan are kind of like – in my head at least – they’re kind of like all connected in some sort of way. I don’t know how, I’m just as curious as the rest of you! But that’s just one theory that I have because they all have a lot in common in their own ways.
KY: It’s an interesting core four that I don’t think we would’ve thought kind of come together! I’ve heard that behind the scenes you guys are the opposite of tense and scary. So how is it balancing keeping things light and happy versus the traumas you have to shoot?
AK: I think definitely when we have off time, it’s very different than when we’re on set! We try to keep it as lighthearted as possible and we have a lot of fun and there’s a lot of really funny people, but you know, when you’re doing a scene that’s intense it’s definitely more silent and there’s a weight to the day, even if you wanna try and avoid it!
But I think we do a really good job of having a lot of fun and laughing and fooling around, and it’s not all dark all the time.
KY: The end of Season 1 changed up the dynamic, with Sara going off into the woods with Boyd (played by Harold Perrinaeu.) What was it like changing that shooting dynamic and tapping into Sara’s new role as having to lead a little bit?
AK: It was really cool! I loved it a lot, obviously because of all this stuff that she had gone through the season and kind of gaining trust with Boyd was something new for her, which was interesting to play.
And that that journey of him finally trusting her was really cool. It was a lot of fun to play around and to be able to have so much time with Harold – he was amazing and we had a great time, we really had each other’s back out there, spiderwebs and all!
KY: Her reintroduction to this town dynamic has been so heartbreaking to watch. How has it been preparing for that sustained level of just pure heartbreak?
AK: It was really sad. When I read episode five, I was like, “Oh no. Sad.” It was really hard. I was like kind of dreading it. I did like shooting, shooting, shooting, and some of those scenes just because they’re so heartbreaking.
But it’s only because she cares about them so much, even though, you know, she’s ruined it. I don’t blame them for not wanting her around, but it was, yeah, it was heartbreaking.
KY: Kind of in a similar vein, what’s been the scariest thing that you’ve had to go through shooting this year?
AK: The scariest thing? I feel like I’m always doing the scary stuff. (Laughs) So I guess there are lots of scary things that happened to me in Season 1. And a lot of scary things happen [this season], but it’s more like an internal thing than an external one this season, which is almost harder. But if you continue to watch, you’ll see what happens! It’s a crazy, crazy season, without me giving anything away.
KY: That’s a good tagline to keep people tuning in! And if we do get a Season 3, where would you like to see Sara’s story arc go?
AK: I mean, again, with the show, there are so many possibilities, which is what makes it so exciting. But I think if people keep to like continue to tune in for Season 2, I’d love to hear everyone’s theories of where they think everything is gonna go once it’s over!
KY: Have you heard any favorite theories that you really like about what’s happening?
AK: I mean, there are so many good ones, so many good ones. And I love – I was just saying, someone asked me this and I said I love hearing everyone’s insight into the show because sometimes it’s something that I would never even think of! And that makes it more interesting for me. I just like, yeah, love how invested people get. It’s really cool. It really is.
The Season 2 finale of From airs Sunday, June 25 at 9:00 p.m. ET on MGM+.
