Dancing With Myself: Lily Kate on finding her groove to victory

NBC‘s latest competition series Dancing With Myself has people showing off their best moves—and winning over America. Given dance challenges by a star-studded panel that includes The Voice alums Shakira and Nick Jonas, contestants have a short time to learn the routines and take them to the next level.

One of the brightest stars has been Lily Kate, the Las Vegas dancer who won the show’s fourth episode. Before Dancing With Myself airs its season finale tomorrow, I checked in with Lily to talk about her experience and what winning her round has meant to her.

“Back in November, a casting director had reached out to me via email. It said ‘brand new dance show’ and it said Shakira’s name,” she recalled. “The minute I saw that, I knew I had to submit for it.”

“I knew it’d be a once in a lifetime thing, because obviously seeing Shakira it’s like ‘Oh my gosh,'” Lily enthused. But she didn’t necessarily think that she was a contender until she took the stage. “I was just trying to soak it all in,” she added, “but in that final round I was like ‘I actually have a shot [at winning].’ It was crazy.”

Like many artists who appear on a reality competition series, though, what stuck with Lily the most were the more long-term things she was able to take away from participating. Winning was the icing on the cake after the great experience she had on the show.

“The thing I really loved most about doing the show is the friendships I’ve made,” she enthused. “My whole entire cast—everyone on my episode [were] the most amazing people ever. They are so sweet and I feel like they’ve all inspired me so much to be a better dancer. Through the process of the show, I learned to just keep going, don’t give up, because it was a long process and I didn’t really know if I’d get through. It showed me that if you keep trying, good things will happen.”

Now that she’s won her episode and the season is winding down, her focus is on taking the lessons learned and the momentum she gained to further her career. “Obviously this is an amazing opportunity, so I’ve been trying to post as much as I can to my socials,” she explained. “I’ve been engaging with anyone who comments to me. I’m just trying to take any opportunity I get and see where it takes me. I’ve been looking at this as just the beginning, because this was a huge experience and it was just such a surreal moment for me, but I want it to keep going.”

Dancing With Myself airs Tuesdays at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Episodes are now streaming on Peacock.
