BF: Do you find yourself missing the earlier part of your career at all? Do you ever want to just sit down and play again, or have you completely moved on with as much as you’re doing now?
CH: Sometimes, Macy’s band and I occasionally will get into the studio. I’ll hop on a keyboard and we’ll play around with stuff, and it’s really a lot of fun. But I don’t necessarily miss it. Sometimes I’ll just sit down and play, or I did have this one vision of eventually playing at a piano bar somewhere, in a little corner, just doing it for me because I find when I do it for myself, it’s more fulfilling.
I kind of miss writing. I’ve been having a little bit of writer’s block because I’m just so consumed with doing other things. But I feel like I’m kind of getting to the tail end of that. I have an 18-year-old, so I’ve been spending a lot of time raising my daughter and I wanted to be fully present for her. I didn’t want to do a lot of touring or anything and have to be away from her at that point in her life. I still do quite a bit of traveling with Macy as her tour manager, managing all of her logistics. So there is a lot to do and I still get to see a lot, but I don’t have to go up on stage.
It’s just a different dynamic. And I think for me in terms of who I am as a person and the way my brain operates, I need it. I think I needed that other side, not the creative side, but more of the business side. So for me, it’s very fulfilling.
