Chicago Med: Is Stevie the new Ava?

Episode Title: “Be The Change You Want To See”

Episode Description: Dylan and Will deal with a dishonest patient whose lupus is in remission. A wealthy donor makes inappropriate advances toward Stevie. Vanessa, Crockett and Charles try to convince a young woman to have life-saving surgery.

What To Watch For: Dr. Stevie Hammer (new series regular Kristin Hager) gets her first “A” story in this episode. However, it has certain elements of deja vu. The promo for the episode focuses on Stevie being hit on by a hospital donor and said donor not taking it well when he doesn’t get what he wants. But remember how we kind of explored this area with Dr. Ava Bekker (former series regular Norma Kuhling)?

Ava was the object of Cornelius Rhodes’ (D.W. Moffett) creepy attention for a bit. Chicago Med ended up taking it even further in an uncomfortable direction by revealing that Ava slept with him to get what she wanted as part of her character’s total self-destruction. While Stevie isn’t going to turn into a sociopath, what will her plotline explore that Ava’s story didn’t?

Donors and other outside parties (i.e. pharmaceutical companies, board members) putting pressure on the hospital workers is nothing new. Chicago Med has explored the general concept before. So hopefully there’s something different in this episode than just “Stevie rebuffing advances of donor and Goodwin having to deal with donor’s upset.” Maybe we’ll learn more about Stevie. Maybe Kristin Hager will get a big scene where Stevie tells this guy off. She doesn’t seem to mince words so far. But if we’re going to this thematic well again there’s probably a reason why.

Here’s another thought, by the way: since the writers established a history between Stevie and Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss), does it seem like those two are destined to hook up before the end of Chicago Med season 7? Will certainly did have a look on his face when Stevie walked away near the conclusion of last week’s episode, and this show usually doesn’t let its main characters stay single for very long. It wouldn’t be surprising at all if we traded Manstead in for Hamstead.
